A large-scale modification of the videogame Borderlands 2 by Gearbox Software. Developed with the assistance of a small team of amateur developers & coders.
Our mission was to develop a comprehensive overhaul of the game's system and address certain pain points from fans that were common complaints such as a lack of exciting loot or useful player power.
A full reorganization and re-balancing of the weapons and items throughout the entire game was the largest component we worked on.
All weapon and item archetypes in general received a pass on aspects such as rate-of-fire, basic damage before levels and resistances, and in some cases bullet patterns shot by certain weapons & items.
What we also addressed were loot tables carried by enemies, that is what kind of loot they would drop. The team changed all locations, drop rates, and rarities of certain items. We addressed the allocations of these items to not only be more fair, but the themes of certain weapons to be tied to more appropriate enemies.
Some items were also completely remade to better reflect what they were intended to do, or completely replaced by a unique item developed by the team. A new item type we brought up were what we called "Hybrids" which combined aspects of certain legendary items along with base archetypes or special types rarely seen in the game. We introduced these items to make more exciting special items to differentiate themselves from a sometimes "homogeneous" loot pool where everything tended to feel the same.
Player classes also received a significant makeover. All powers and abilities were either remade or damage types changed to better reflect gameplay at all tiers of difficulty. Powers reorganized around different skill trees were also reflective of granting the player more agency and power at early levels.
One such example is with the Psycho class that originally had a power that allowed him to breathe a cloud of flame, casting damage over time on enemies. We changed this power to be earned later in the respective skill tree and changed the damage type to Slag damage to debuff and damage all enemies caught in the cone. This allowed players to more quickly pass out the Slag debuff, which is necessary to deal optimal damage at endgame levels, and deal significant bursts of damage in a wide area.
Despite a limitation with using unofficial mod tools that were developed without the help of Gearbox Software, our team succeeded largely to address a common amount of pain points in the game. Our community Discord server provided plenty of fan input alongside our dev team.
